Pre-Doctoral Training Programme

The Department of Electronic Systems Engineering (ESE), IISc, launched its 1st edition of the Pre-Doctoral Training Programme in January 2026 to nurture high-potential students and inspire them toward research and PhD-oriented careers. The programme provides early exposure to research culture, problem formulation, scientific inquiry, and independent thinking through interactions with faculty, researchers, and ongoing research activities within the department.

The inaugural edition of the programme received an overwhelming response, attracting 8,679 applications from students across India. Reflecting the programme’s commitment to inclusivity and broad participation, 48% of applications were received through the diversity track, representing students from underrepresented and socially diverse backgrounds, while 40% of applicants were women.

Following a rigorous and holistic evaluation process, 52 candidates were selected for the programme. The selection process considered multiple factors, including academic performance, CGPA, Statement of Purpose, demonstrated interest in research and doctoral studies, and overall alignment with the objectives of the programme.

The strong response to the programme underscores the growing interest among students in pursuing research-driven careers. Through this initiative, ESE aims to strengthen the pipeline of future researchers and innovators by providing talented students with meaningful exposure to cutting-edge research and academic excellence at IISc.
